Why ice maker not working [2011-12-05]

The reason why your ice maker might not be working can be many. First of all ice makers will not cycle if the temperature is not cold enough. The prpper temperature can be below ten degrees . So make sure your temperature is below 10 degrees.  After that, you will have to determine if  the ice maker is getting water. No water no ice. To see if there is water you must check the simple things first. Is there water coming from the water supply? Check to make sure water supply is turned on, if so, it does not necessarily mean water is getting to the water solenoid. You might at this point turn the water off and run some water into a bucket from the supply line  to determine that there is in fact water at the solenoid. If  there is no water you might have a problem with supply valve or no water to the house plumbing. Once you have determined you in fact have water you have to ask yourself is the problem  at the ice maker or the water solenoid or possibly a blocked or broken ice maker supply line. Your Ice maker and water solenoid could be working properly and you could have a broken or blocked ice maker supply  line. The water solenoid and supply line could be working and  the ice maker may be broken.  Maybe the ice maker is working and supply line is in good condition and not broken and the water solenoid is not working.  Most icemakers are electronic modules these day although there are some electrical mechanical ones out there you will have to determine which you have by removing  the cover off the icemaker head .Cycling the icemaker will help you  to determine  if you are getting power to the water solenoid. Water solenoids can be a simple single valve a dual valve or a very complicated five way valve you must determine which solenoid goes to the ice maker. To see if the water solenoid is in  fact not working you have to send power to the solenoid.  If the water solenoid is good and you don't have a broken or blocked line you  probably have a bad ice maker.  If you have no power at water soleniod when cycling the ice maker. At this point if you are saying wow this is complicated you are right.   And the reason we alway suggest you should call a certified appliance technician is just this.
